How to Make Oat Milk that’s Better than Store Bought
Hate milk but still want the calcium? Did you find out that almond milk is ruining the environment? Here’s the milk substitute for you! Oat milk.
Not only is it delicious, nutritious, and environmentally friendly, it’s extremely easy to make!
I’m personally not a fan of dairy milk, it’s weird and it spoils, and I don’t think it made me grow taller (said every bitter person under 5’5″).
Therefore, I’ve tried many substitutes in my ongoing pursuit to avoid milk.
Almond, cashew, pistachio, coconut, and more.
So when I found oat milk, I wasn’t expecting much.
But I was quickly proven wrong.
Not only is it easy to make, but it also tastes delicious and is a great source of nutrition!
What is Oat Milk?
Oat milk is vegan milk made from a combination of blended oats and water. Plus, it’s creamy, smooth, gluten-free, nut-free, and can be done from the comfort of your home in under 5 minutes.
You don’t really have to prep anything either. Plus, it is very delicious with any added flavoring.
You can also use oat milk in baking, as it does not add a nutty or oaty flavor. This is also great in smoothies, coffees, and cereal!
Note, the best type of oats to choose are rolled oats. Quick oats can create a slimy texture and steel-cut oats are not processed enough to make the milk. You must get the right kind for this recipe.
Ingredients

How to Make Oat Milk
It’s super simple and easy to make.
There are just a couple of steps. Just combine all the ingredients and blend. No really, that’s it!
I, too, was pleasantly surprised.
There are a couple of 0f things you can do to improve the recipe, such as making sure the water is cold (view Notes at the end) but besides some tips and tricks, it is pretty straightforward!
Easiest Oat Milk Recipe

- 4 cups cold water
- 1 cup oats
- Pinch of sea salt
- 1 – 2 tbsp sweetener optional
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract optional
Instructions
- Combine the water, oats, sea salt, and additional ingredients in a blender or food processor.Blend for about 30 seconds.
- Strain mixture into a large bowl or pitcher by putting it through a nut milk bag or thin dish towel.Strain it twice to remove any lingering oat.
- Transfer the milk into an airtight container such as a mason jar and store in the fridge for up to 7 days.
Notes for the Perfect Oat Milk
- Use organic and gluten-free oats if possible! These are much healthier.
- Water should be cold so that the oats do not cook at all.
- Do not over-blend the mixture or you will have porridge.
- Do not squeeze too much, or else you will have residue in your milk (gross).
- You can leave it to drip for a couple of minutes
- Add any flavors you’d like! My favorite is strawberry oat milk. I add about 1 to 2 teaspoons of extract and it comes out perfectly!
